Windows XP Hotfix

What is this? I'm having trouble with my computer
running slowly, but I still have a lot of memory, so I
thought about deleting programs that I don't use, and
found about 15 programs that say "Windows XP Hotfix" with
a "(SP1) See Q30531 for more information", plus many
other reference code on the other applications. What does
that mean? Can I erase them without hurting anything?
HELP! Where else can I erase unused things to speed up
my computer? I delete Temp files on a regualar basis.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Are you confusing Memory (RAM) with Disk Space?

No. Hotfixes are the Windows updates (mostly security-oriented)
that you've been installing all along. Delete them at your peril;
doing so will reinstate the security exposure (or other problem)
they were designed to correct.

Those are there so you could *uninstall* the patches you downloaded from
Windows Update. Each corresponds to a hidden folder of files needed for
the purpose - Windows\$NTUninstallQnnnnnn$ for the fix described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn
and listed in Add/Remove as 'Hotfix Qnnnnnn, or Hotfix KBnnnnnn

If you decide you will not want to uninstall a fix (and if all is
running smoothly you probably won't) then delete the folder. If you
then try in Add/remove, to Remove that one, it will fail, and you will
be offered the option of removing the entry there
