edition but I can't find word and excel. I thought it was

Word and Excel are not part of Windows XP and can be purchased separately.
If you are suppose to have them, look to see if you have the CDs for the
programs and install them.
Otherwise contact the place you purchased the computer from.

You're not serious !

Unless MS Offices' - Word and Excel were bundled / licensed with your laptop
as part of the deal you have to BUY it !!

I found MS Works v7.0 is a good replacement for MS Office along with Sun's
Star Office 6.0 (with Update 3 applied) for me. I do not use MS Office
extensively, so the alternatives to MS Office are good for me. Both MS
Works 7.0 and Star Office 6.0 works great with MS Word documents and MS
Excel spreadsheets from Office 2000/XP users. MS Works and Star Office both
cost less than Office. Before selecting an Office suite to use, check out
the pro's and con's of both. Some users still need to buy MS Office over
the alternatives.

If you think that Windows XP includes Excel or Word, you're mistaken. Neither it, nor any other version of Windows, has ever included Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, or any other application software. Such programs have to be bought, either by themselves or as part of Microsoft Office.

If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows, came with Excel or Word, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled Excel as part of the package he sold you, not because that version of Windows came with them.
