Turned on the computer and I get the microsoft windows logo screen. then the
screen comes up we apologize for the inconvience but windows did not start
successfully... I choose to start windows normally. I get the splash screen
again then the machine reboots. get the same screen again. I choose Safe mode
this time and I see a list drivers loading with the last one listed as
...\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys then the box reboots. I've disconnected
everything except the power cord and still getting the error

It's a toshiba satellite laptop model M55-S135. It just loops
and I'm using XP Home

That is great advice if he has an XP CD. Hopefully he does, but most
Toshiba laptops these days don't come with an XP CD - just the i386
folder on the HDD and a "Recovery" CD that restores the laptop to the
"as delivered" software state.

If all else fails, he could use that, then go through the pain of
reinstalling all his software and XP updates. A real pain.

Thanks, Toshiba.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like you'll need to do a complete clean load of
XP using the Toshiba recovery CD. If the computer is still under warranty
don't be afraid to take it in. My Toshiba Satellite M45-S355 has been
serviced twice for bad USBs, and bad HD.

Do you get the Toshiba splash screen before the XP splash screen? On some
Toshiba notebooks you don't need to go into the BIOS to change the boot
order. On the toshiba splash screen, hit F12, then the "right arrow" key
until you highlight the cd diskette icon, then push the "enter" key to boot
from Toshiba's recovery diskette.

note: My Toshiba had a similiar problem of looping, and the recovery
diskette failed time after time. The Looping was caused by the Fujitsa HD
going bad after 7 months of usage. Luckily, it was covered under Toshiba's
standard warranty. Have you notice lagging of the computer during usage or
any system Input/Output errors, before the looping problem?

Thanks for the note. I did this and I received the error
"The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable errors" as soon as
I hit return for the CHKDSK command.

Any other suggestions?
