I bought a machine with XP home OEM but need professional
as it does not work properly on NT 4.0 LAN. Would like to
know if I can purchase XP Professional upgrade or do I
need to purchase XP Professional full package. Please
advise Thanks

The upgrade version will work........... but since you bought oem, if you
did not get a real xp oem cd then if you ever want to reinstall xp pro
upgrade you will not have any qualifying media to prove to xp that you can
use the upgrade version. A recovery cd from the oem will not work, it has to
be a real oem xp cd. If you dont have one and the oem wont give you one,
then you may want to get the full version so you can have reinstalls
available. This is one of the downfalls of buying an oem(pre-installed)
computer.

You can purchase the upgrade, however, be sure you have all of
your OEM drivers saved or can download them to re-install should you
need to. Sometimes, OEM versions pre-installed on machines are
designed specifically for the particular machine.

In that situation he would first have to install the OEM XP Home and
then the XP Pro Upgrade. A bit more time consuming but still
workable.

The Upgrade CD is all you need. Run it from the present Home system,
enter Install, continue with Upgrade. Give it the Product key that
comes with the Pro CD (and *don't* forget that!).

Right he can only do an upgrade install. I said reinstall, I meant clean
install.
