Windows XP Home upgrade vs. full product

Annette

My computer came with XP Home edition. However, Compaq
didn't provide an operating disc. Instead they provided
recovery discs. Which means I can't do a repair, I have
to do a restore and loose installed programs, etc.

Can I safely purchase the upgrade edition of XP Home and
upgrade or migrate to the new licensed copy, or do I need
to buy the full version?

Thanks.

Compaq (HP) offer both a "normal, non-destructive recovery" or
a "destructive recovery" which reformats the hard drive. Read your
User's Guide or visit the following website to learn how to use
these recovery procedures.

If you want to use a conventional Windows XP version, then you'll
need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP and proceed with
a "clean install".

Or they could buy XP Home OEM, then they would be able to do a repair or
a clean install, though the non-destructive recovery option, if
available, would be the cheapest way.
