Windows XP Home update hangs

I just finished installing SP3 on my laptop. I returned to windows update to
check for further updates and encountered the following problem. The update
page loads, it then asks for express or custom. I choose custom and the green
progress bar appears. It never gets past this stage. The progress bar just
shoots the green bar across the screen incessantly; for hours on end. It
generates no error code & it never makes it past that screen. I have tried
rebooting with no luck. Not sure what else to do.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
