Windows xp startup hang

I am having problems with windows xp hanging at the screen where the progress bar runs. The green bar will go across 7 times and then hang on the eigth. Sometimes it hangs for a split second and then continues. Other times it hangs and I am forced to restart. Any Ideas???????

I take it you are able to get into Windows XP, though there is a slow
boot and the computer sometimes hangs.

The msconfig utility is especially useful because it is a simple way
of disabling programs that start in the beginning and may cause
