Windows XP Home takes excessively long to shut down

Windows takes as long as 1 minute before it even looks
like it is going to start shutting down. Sometimes it
won't start at to shut down at all. I have windows
service pack 1 updated.
 
Windows can take awhile to clean things up at shutdown, especially if you leave a lot of windows open when you shutdown. If you have setup an option to clear the pagefile at shutdown, that is an obvious cause of delayed shutdown.
