Windows XP Home System Restore

Hi, i have just found on my Windows XP that I can no longer restore a
setting form a previous time. On running system restore it goes through the
motions but when it reboots a message comes up to say that the restore did
not work and that no files were restored.

I also find that in my Programmes list I suddenly have loads of duplicated
files of the same programmes.

Any suggestions? I run a fire wall which I disable.

"I run a fire wall which I disable"
NEVER disable the firewall unless you already have another firewall.
It only takes seconds, much less time than it takes you to do anything
productive without a firewall.

There may be corrupted data in system Restore.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.
