Windows XP Home slow to open websites

P

Phil Weldon

I have a new Sony laptop that came with Windows XP Home installed [Pentium M
1.86 GHz/ 1 GByte DDRAM / 100 GByte hard drive (60 GBytes free) / Intel
Centrino chipset].

Using Internet Explorer on the laptop all web sites take a long time to open
(perhaps 1 minute) even though downloads and streaming can come through at
about the limit of my 3 Mbps ADSL.

A desktop with Windows XP Pro on the same wireless NAT router will open
those same websites in 5 seconds or less.

As far as I can tell the settings for Internet Explorer are the same on both
systems.

Both system use the same resident security programs with the same settings.

I have tried several checks and tests.

* Disabling the resident security programs does not make a difference.
* 'Content advisor' is NOT enabled.
* I have cleaned out most of the Sony loaded software, though I suppose
something may still be left that could have an effect.

Any suggestions or descriptions of similar problems are welcome and
appreciated.

Speed of the hard drive of the Laptop vs the desktop
The website is read into cache which resides on the HD.

Hi Phil,
I think you done right to uninstall what called * Software Bundle* came
installed on your Laptop and eaten HDD space you supose been paid for to get
the Ultimate benefit from.
But this Bundle do n't give up without causing you a pain, some may while
you clearing grap a system file with it (IE one) or you uninstall it without
knowing so...
Try register your IE DLLs by Opening a Run Command and type;
Iexplorer /rereg Press OK.
=> Or you can do uninstall/Repair for IE from the Control Panel >>
Add/Remove Programs to Correct the core file/folder been corrupted from these
defective Softwares.
=> Another is to set your TIF file Size betwen 50-80 MBs to do that go to
Tools >> Internet Options >> On the General Tab click on the button labled
Settings and there you will see the TIF file move the slider to the
pre-mentioned size, that will make IE read /pull the TIF quicker in less time.
All the Above assuming you done your cleaning for malwares/Viruses.
HTH.
Please let us know your progress.
Regards,
nass

Make sure your cache is empty and let windows manage it. (Temp Internet
files) if the temp folder is full and is small you will get a slow IE. also
make sure you set your IE to renew the site when you visit it and not
automatic. those settings are in the IE Internet options.

TIF works best around 50 MB.

Thanks for your reply.
However the temp folder contained only 30 MBytes. Changing the setting for
'Check for newer versions of stored page makes no difference, nor does
changing the Internet temp file limit or contents. The time to access
microsoft.com or google.com for the Windows XP Home system is about 10 times
that of the Windows XP Pro system (50 seconds vs. 5 seconds).

Thanks for your reply.

However, Windows XP SP2 (Home or Pro) does not have rereg, and the Internet
Explorer exec is iexplore.exe, not iexplorer.exe.

I have reregistered the Internet Explorer dlls and found it made no
difference.

I will report if I make progress.
