Windows XP home install stops responding when Installing Devices

I'm trying to install windows XP home edition on my laptop
and when it gets to the point in installation where it
installs devices it stops responding. My hard drive
activity light and cd activity light stop blinking and my
CD drive or hard drive doesn't make any noise. Please help!

If you no longer have your previous OS installed or it is no longer
accessible, reinstall it, then place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup
screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility," the report it creates
may point to the source of the issue.
