Decribe slowly. Doing what tasks?
Has it always been this way?
Did you buy the machine preinstalled with XP? What kind of machine is it?
If you right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, Performance
Settings and set the machine to adjust for best performance, does it work
better?

both my windows machines are doing the same thing, but with mine it's
"most" apps
one is win2000 (flawless for 3 years)
one is winXP home (flawless for 1 year)
it happens on almost all apps, everything takes a long time to open, you
can monitor in task manager, it says "not responding" then it will
finally open and changes to "running"
no need to hard boot, but sometimes the hang is up to 2 minutes
you perform some action in a program after it's open, same thing,
shutting programs down, same thing. You can kill in task manager but it
takes a while also.
I usually run the XP box only, I lived with it for about 3 days and then
assuming it was the blaster thing, since I NEVER open unknown
attachments, ran the patch, no help.
So I turned on the win2000 box, it ran ok for a few hours then started
doing the exact same thing.
I haven't installed any new software or done anything unusual on either
machine.
I performed the symantec online security check for viruses and trojan
horses, it's says the win2000 machine is clean, still waiting for the XP
to finish running. Does this thing test for the blaster "worm"? If so it
should say viruses, trojans and worms.
I went to
www.grc.com and ran their "shields up" it said I was 100
percent stealth on first 1056 TCP ports (whatever that means) The boxes
are all green.
I'm behind a hardware firewall, a Linksys network cable router.
the brother-in-law is trying to get me to change to Linux but I've got
too many critical apps that only run on Windows
thanks for any help
