Hi, Larry.

I'm 68. Is that old enough? ;<)
i need to know how to extract a file off my XP CD,

Which file? And why do you need to extract it?

Have you tried the System File Checker? WinXP automatically keeps a copy of
all its operating system files in a cache on your hard drive. Whenever the
working copy of one of those files goes bad (or gets deleted), WFP (the
Windows File Protection system) automatically replaces it with that "known
good" copy held in the cache. After every Service Pack or hotfix is
installed, the copy in the cache is updated, too. My computer (WinXP Pro
with SP1, English version) has three copies of cplexe.exe; each is 57,399
bytes, dated 3/11/2004; one of the copies is in \Windows\System32\dllcache.
Do you have a copy of this file in your dllcache?

When WFP doesn't catch the problem, we can run sfc /scannow. This will
compare each operating system file with the one in the cache and replace any
missing or damaged ones. This means that we very rarely have to manually
extract a file from the CD. Have your WinXP CD handy when running SFC
because it may need to see the CD.

You should have SP1 installed. If your WinXP CD is less than a year or so
old, SP1 is probably integrated into WinXP. There are several ways to check
to see if you have it installed. The easiest and quickest way is to press
the Windows logo key and the Pause/Break key at the same time. The System
Properties window should pop up in your face. Under the System heading it
should say WinXP Home and, if you have SP1, it should say that, too.

If you don't have SP1, then visit Windows Update and get it and all the
later fixes. Among other things, those fixes help to protect us from many
of the viruses and other bad things on the Internet these days.

Why are your user manuals in Japanese? Are you in Japan? Do you read or
speak Japanese? Are you using a Japanese version of Windows?

I see one other message from you in this newsgroup (Discussion Group). It
is dated yesterday (4/28/04), asks essentially the same question, and has
one answer from "AnnonUser", who said (about cplexe.exe):
"if you do a search of your harddrive, you should see that you have it and
the cd will read."

Did you see that response, Larry?

Hi Larry:

Are you using a Japanese version of XP Home? (you indicated your user
manuals on disk are in Japanese) Sometimes, user manuals on disk
are published in several languages. Perhaps there is also an English
version of the manuals on disk?

Anyway, to extract a file from your XP CD do this:

Click on START. Click on RUN. Type in "msconfig.exe" (no quotes)
and press enter. When the configuration editor opens, click on the
General tab if it's not already open.

Look for a small dialog box that says "Expand File" (should be on the
right side bottom). Click on that box. Another dialog box will
open asking what file to restore and where to restore it from. Type
in the file name and select where you wish to restore it from.
Typically this will be the drive letter of your CD Rom drive. Be sure
to insert your XP CD first. Also select where you want the file
restored to. This could be c:\windows or c:\windows\system32, or
wherever else it belongs.

Hope this helps you.

Your CD is probably the original one of XP (unless it says 'Service Pack
1' on the CD itself)

Service Pack 1 which came out in 2002 was in two forms - one installed
from the net in an 'Express method' which is unlikely to have included
that file; the other by downloading a complete 'Network' version - a 130
MB download - or by ordering it on a CD. It does not sound as if you
have the CD.

Look in C:\Windows to see if you have a folder ServicePackFIles - if so
look in that in
Windows\ServicePackFIles\1386\Lang
and the file may be there.

If not, send me an email at (e-mail address removed) and I'll arrange to put a
copy where you can get it
