Windows XP Home and Disk Share

Hello,

I have a large HD connected a Windows XP Home computer. I want to use
this drive as a backup drive from a Vista OS computer. It turns out Home
version of XP does not allow drive shares across a network.

a) Is there a way around this limitation?
b) Can I install Windows XP pro over existing Home edition without
wiping existing system?

Thank you,

Athena

I don't have XP but can't you create a folder on the drive called "Backup"
and share that?

That should be "I don't have XP "HOME".

That's not correct. Windows XP Home can do this just fine.

Your information is incorrect. XP Home has no problems with network
drive shares. Your problems are caused by something else. If you are
getting any error messages, please quote the exact text. It would also
be useful to know what backup program you have. If you are unsure what
details to include in your next post so you can get focused help, please

"... The network share cannot be on a computer running Windows XP Home
(0x81000002A).....

This is the error message one gets when when runs "Backup and Restore
Center" from Vista to backup files from it to a drive on Windows XP Home
computer for a folder with full access rights (How do I know that, well I
can copy files manually without problem to it!)

So,

1) Create identical user accounts and passwords on both WinXP and Vista
machines. You can
still boot directly to the desktop into whatever account you like for
convenience. Assign permissions to the folder accordingly.
2) Run Backup and Restore Center from Vista.
3) Choose a folder on a network drive connected Win XP Home machine as
backup location
4) Enter the same username and password for both accounts
5) You will get the error I've given above

Tell me then what is wrong? Error message is coming from MS Vista
Business. I did not make it up.

I didn't say you made anything up. I simply asked you to explain what
you were doing and with what program. Apparently the Vista Backup
program is pretty crippled. Use something else. Suggestions:

1. Acronis True Image - does imaging and incremental backups -
www.acronis.com
2. Second Copy - does backups but no imaging - www.centered.com
