Windows XP Hangs - No error reports

From last thursday, I've started to have Windwos XP Pro to die on me. I
have no errors in the Event Viewer, I get no blue-screens. Things just
hang up. There is a sound coming from the HDD just before the computer
freezes.

Is there any reasonably easy way to debug just what the heck is going
on? All was working very decently not too long ago, and to my knowledge
I haven't really touched much at all just before it started to do this.
Well, I installed Symbian SDK but now I've been uninstalling stuff like
mad to get rid of this.

I did have a constant error messages coming from F-Secure Backweb,
which I have now tried to uninstall, some service still seems to launch
over and over again.

I am dual-booting to linux, so while I wait for answers I try to go to
that side and see if I get any problems there. In that case, it would
hint about a hardware problem, but I dare not to think of that yet.
After all, it has been okay for some months now.

Hi,

I would start by doing three things:

1) Start/run "sfc /scannow" and allow the system file checker to validate
the system file set.

2) Download a drive diagnostic from the web site of the drive manufacturer
and use it to check the state of the drive. It may be a candidate for
replacement.

3) If it passes the drive check, run "chkdsk c: /r" and follow the prompts
to schedule it to occur on a reboot.
