Windows XP hangs inexplicably several times a day

I am having a recurring problem with XP. It hangs inexplicably and all
I can do to get back into Windows is to cold reboot the system. I use
Firefox as my browser and it seems to be happening when XP has too much
to do. Could be the hyperthreading or possibly overheating. Have
Pentium D805 CPU and a ASUS VST775A motherboard with a gig of RAM.

Any advice would be gratefully received.
