Hardware conflict causes XP boot screen to hang

I installed a Zonet ZUC2400 PCI card (USB + Firewire) and now Windows
XP hangs when it gets to the Windows logo screen. I removed my Win-TV
PVR-150 card and rebooted. Same deal. I then removed the Zonet card,
rebooted (normally) and inserted the Zonet card while XP was turned
on. XP identified the card and I was able to connect my camcorder and
transfer video flawlessly. But when I restarted, Windows XP hangs
(like before).

MY SPECS
* Motherboard and CPU: ASUS P5B Motherboard, Intel CPU Support: (Core
2 Duo/Quad, Pentium 4/D, Celeron), Intel P965/ICH8 Chipset, Socket 775
* Card: Zonet ZUC2400 (USB 2.0 + Firewire PCI Combo Card, VIA VT63-6
and VIA VT6214L listed on chips)
OS: Windows XP SP2, fully up to date
*ATI Radeon 9600

Is there something I need to install to make this work? Is the VIA
chipset the culprit? A user at NewEgg.com said this Zonet ZUC2400 card
works perfectly with the Asus P5B, so I don't understand.

If a combo card won't work, try buying a card with a single function on
it. Like a card with just Firewire ports.

I'm not crazy about the "combo" concept, and if I had to buy a combo card,
I'd want one with a PCI bridge chip on it. For example, this old Siig card
uses a "HINT" brand PCI bridge chip, near the card connector. That isolates
the loading the card presents (three chips), from the main PCI bus. For
a card like this to work, the OS and BIOS have to understand how to
traverse a bridge chip. (Some 10 year old computers don't know how to
do that. A card like this should not be a problem for a modern computer.)

There are Firewire and USB2 cards with PCI Express x1 connectors,
if you have a spare x1 left. If you've run out of PCI slots, then
shop for a more expensive PCI Express x1 card.

With WinXP SP2, you already have built-in drivers for Firewire and
USB2. So that should not be the problem.

SOLUTION: I made a mistake by installing the CD that came with the
card. It wasn't needed and messed things up. To solve the problem, I
following these instructions to remove those nasty drivers from my
system:

................
http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_installation_tips504.html

Ever have those drivers or devices that just won't go away even though
you're sure you've uninstalled them? Or, say you replace your old
100Mbps network card with a faster Gbps adapter. But, you can't re-
assign it the same IP address because your system insists there is
still an adapter installed with that same IP address and you forgot to
remove the driver before removing the old card (which is now in your
little brother's pc)?

To get rid of that unwanted driver, device, or service:
1) Open the "Start" menu and choose "Run..."
2) Type in "cmd" (without the quotes) and click "ok".
3) At the cmd prompt, type in "set
devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" (without the quotes) and press
enter. (Note that nothing seems to happen--this is ok. We are actually
setting an environment variable which is going to help us to see
hidden devices)
4) On the next cmd prompt line, type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the
quotes) and press enter. This will launch the Windows Device Manager
Console.
5) In the Device Manager Console, from the "View" menu, select "Show
Hidden Devices".

Now, as you expand the different drivers and devices in device manager
you will see not only the items that Windows currently detects as
installed on your pc (these are the usual items displayed), but you
will also see drivers, devices, and services which have been loaded in
the past but were not uninstalled or are not currently started. You
can find your offending device, right-click, and choose "uninstall" to
remove it from the system completely.

Be careful though; you should note that non-loaded devices, drivers,
and services are "grayed" out, but that doesn't necessarily mean that
you should delete all of them. Only remove items you know you don't
need. And, be careful that you don't change too many devices or you
might need to re-activate your Windows installation.

Last thing, if you accidentally exit the Device Manager Console you
will need to start over again at the cmd prompt. To close the cmd
prompt window, type "exit" (without the quotes).
....................

I then shut down, installed the Zonet card, turned on, let XP find the
device and install the XP drivers and then it worked fine. I restarted
to be sure and the computer launched XP perfectly.
