System hangs on cold power up in Windows XP Pro

When I do a restart my system boots fine. However, when I do a boot from a
cold power up, my system will hang and not complete the startup cycle
completely and I even have to shut off my system by holding the power
buttion..

Sometimes it takes several cold starts to get through the complete boot up
process. Frequently I have to go into a safe mode boot, and then restart my
system to get totally up and productive. However, this does not always work.
I do have an NVIDA graphic card.

I have been trying to locate the problem for some time now, and have tried
various things to resolve the problems. I even discovered that Norton System
Works did not add Live Update to the Windows Firewall which was hanging the
system. I have redone the definitions in the Windows Firewall to get passed
100% Utilization problems during boot up.

When I do a restart the system comes up fine. When I do a cold start any
number of symptoms are evident. Sometimes not all the program icons appear in
the system tray, sometimes the mouse hangs. I have redone mouse drivers and
made sure the batteries are new in the MS Intelimouse Explorer 2.0, as well
as the batteries in the MS Wireless Desktop Elite Keyboard.

I am an old Windows guru dating back to the early DOS days. I am just not as
familiar with the tools in Windows XP Pro as I have only been using this
operating system for a year or so.

I would really appreciate some new ideas or pointers on where else to look
for my problem. A reboot works fine almost everytime, but I dread having to
power off my system because it is such a hassle to get back up from a cold
start.

Thanks,

what do you mean by a cold power up?? are you trying to bring the system back
from hibernation or do you mean a normal system power up.

What I mean by a cold power up is when the system has been turned off
completely for some period of time by doing a normal shutdown (like a night
or even a few days when I am out of town), I then press the "power on" button
on the system unit to bring the system up normally. I never put my system in
hibernation, and the problem I am referring to does not happen on a restart.

Sorry for using a main frame term.

to give you a better answer for this i will need to know exactly when does
the system hang. Does it do so at the windows xp screen where it has the
progress bar running or does it get stuck at the welcome screen where you
choose your account to login. accordingly the problem may range from a driver
problem to a possible hardware one.

HI! I too am facing the same problem. My system hangs at the "Welcome"
Screen. I am the only user of my system hence I do not have multiple users
created. Hence during a normal bootup the system will display the Welcome
Screen and immidiately log in under my user id.

But more often than not, the systems stops responding at the welcome screen.
When I restart, the windows runs scandisk before continuing. (Just thought
that might be of some help.)

It would be great if someone can suggest what the problem could be.

Thanks,

you are sometimes able to log on without errors but not always is that
correct? If it is it may indicate a problem with any one of your drivers.
Therefore an advisable thing would be to find the manufacturer for each of
your hardware and download and update their drivers. A more thorough way of
doing this would be to first try and boot into safe mode. If it boots without
any errors then we need to disable all the hardware except for the cpu,
keyboard and mouse in the device manager and reboot the system and check to
see if it boots without errors. if it does then we need to start with the
iterative process of enabling the devices one by one in the device manager
and restarting the computer and check if we are able to successfully boot to
the desktop.

Do you have any error messages come up on the welcome screen? You may want
to stay on the welcome screen for even upto 5 minutes to check if you do get
any error messages.

Hope this helps
