Hi,

i'm trying to install windows xp sp2 in a computer with an amd k6
processor (350 mhz) and 128 mb.

But when the installation and i try to login into, the computer hangs
(no mouse nor keyboard response) in "applying settings".
If i try to log into in safe mode i can do it...

The last time i try, i log into safe mode and disable all the services,
then i could log in normal mode so i guess there is some service that
is giving me a problem... but i don't know wich one...

there is a way to determine wich one without actually try to disable
them one to one?

thanks in advance,
Jaime Casanova

No, you would need to disable the services one by one. That's the major
process of troubleshooting - making one change at a time and testing. I'll
give you some links where you can look up processes, but you should know
that the computer you've got is not suitable for running XP. The processor
is too slow and you don't have enough RAM. You didn't mention the size of
your hard drive, but I wouldn't install XP on anything smaller than 20GB
and that would be pushing it.

If you can bring your RAM up to 512MB the machine might possibly work
acceptably depending on what you want to do with it. Otherwise, put Win98
back on it or replace the computer.

There is supposed to be a patch to correct the I/O error
resulting from errors involving an AMD K6 CPU. This might
be the root cause for the service error. Do a search at the
support.microsoft.com website for Amdk6upd.exe. It may or may
not be applicable for Windows XP.

I had WinXP Pro running on a P166/128MB ram. Running, not using.
Minimum specs say P233/128MB. His specs meet that. Not by much, but it
does meet.

Physical size to install XP is about 1.5GB -- any updates beyond that
increase size. A 10GB drive will be OK, 20GB would be plenty for most
people.

I don't agree, and I've been a tech for almost 10 years.

Your preferences, or style of using a computer may be different from
most or even the OP -- the OP may not have the moolah to upgrade, I
haven't had money to upgrade (or a need to upgrade) most of my machines.
The workhorse I have runs Linux and BSD. Servers running OpenBSD.
It's a choice. Your choices may not need to be duplicated to the OP.

thanks for the answer. that was my fear... well. hands at work...

well, actually if a disable innecessary services, and return to clasic
desktop style that machine can run xp in a rasonably way...
it will be used for writing articles, just text and no images...
