Windows XP firewall corrupt/???

I had my windows XP firewall enabled. Went to disable it; wanted to see if it was preventing my live-updates from Macafee and/or Microsoft. On the Advanced tab, there is a error message advising the file may be corrupt. It advises using the system restore to go back to an earlier point. I did that and the file is still corrupt. Does this mean the firewall is down permanently? How can it be restored?

Paul,

A little more information is needed, firstly how patched
are you on Windows XP, i.e. Do you have Service Pack 1
installed???.

Secondly what is the name of the file which Windows is
telling you is corrupt.

And also did you make and changes to the system just
before this problem occured???
