Windows XP File Explorer/Manager Doesn't Refresh Data DVD Files and Folders

P

Peter D

For at least a year, I've had this problem. Often (but not always) when I
insert a new DVD of files and folders (I use DVD for offline backup and
storage), Windows Explorer doesn't show the new contents. It still shows the
old contents and folder tree. I've using the "Eject" function in Windows
Explorer, closing and then re-opening Windows Explorer, Refresh -- nothing
works except shutting the computer down and starting again. When I'm trying
to catalog the contents of the DVD it's a real pain. I have searched the Web
and the MS Knowledge Base, but cannot find a solution. Any help is very
appreciated.

Here's what I've tried so far. Results are always that the old contents
still show:
* Using "Eject" in Windows Explorer (figure it tells the system it's been
changed)
* Manually ejecting and closing the DVD drive tray
*Ejecting the DVD and then clicking on the DVD Drive letter to get the
"please insert a disk into Drive H:" message, then closing the drive (this
usually works, but most times I have to Refresh the folders in the left-hand
"Folders" pane. That is, the folders in the right-hand pane show the new
contents but the folders in the left-hand pane show the old content until I
press F5. I noticed that when I eject a DVD and close the drive tray, the
contents will still show in the left-hand pane until I press F5.
* Auto Play on and off.

I have Windows XP Pro with all the updates. I usually use Nero to burn the
DVDs. They show fine/refresh contents on my laptop and in other systems.

Try disabling antivirus scanning on all the removable media.

Try hitting F5 to refresh the view.

SYMPTOMS
When you view the contents of a CD-ROM in Windows Explorer, you can
see the name of the CD-ROM in the left pane, and the folders are displayed
in the right pane. However, after you remove the CD-ROM and insert a
different CD-ROM, the right pane may still display the folders from the
first CD-ROM even though the left pane correctly displays the name of the
new CD-ROM.

CAUSE
This problem can occur if you are using Folder view in Windows Explorer. The
view may not be automatically refreshed in Folder view in Windows Explorer.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
* Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on
the View menu in Windows Explorer.
* Do not use Folder view in Windows Explorer.

Yeah,I know that. It seemed logical to me that the OS would have the
"brains' built into it to realise that the CD or DVD in the drive when the
door is closed might be new.
Try hitting F5 to refresh the view.

Sometimes works, most times it doesn't.

As for the F5/Refresh fix below, I've tried it (just tried it again) and it
doesn't work. And that's using F5 in either/both panes.

Is there any chance you're getting more than one entry in the left pane for
your DVD drive? On my machine, the last entry always sticks there, but just
above it will be the latest CD or DVD I put into the tray. No idea what
causes it, or whether it can be fixed; I've just learned to look for
multiple drive "J"s and it's always there in my case. Ymmv I'm sure.

I recall that used to happen a long time ago, but I think that was back in
Win98SE days. It may have happened since, but if it has I've never noticed
it.

Perhaps the Autorun entry in the registry has been changed or deleted,

The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you insert

This seems to have fixed the problem. I just switched DVDs and the new
contents showed. Oddly, the old DVD Volume Label still showed, but that's
minor for now. I'll continue to monitor and let post results here.
