windows xp fails to boot

System will turn on, but appear to get stuck on main windows screen and does
not go to log on screen. But windows will start up in safe mode. Can anyone
offer assistance? Thanks

Is it Home or Pro.

Thinking about it, it doesn't matter, from safemode can you run system
restore and select a date before the problem.
