Windows XP fails to boot - help !!!!

Hi:

2 days ago... (Jan 05, 2006)
I got a popup window saying Windows is updating ... And then after some time
Windows XP crashed. I got a blue screen with DOS style font error message:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

* Check to make sure hw or sw is properly installed
* If problem persists, disable/remove any newly installed hw or sw.
Disable BIOS Memory Options such as caching or shadowing
* To enter SAFE MODE and to remove hw or sw:
Press F8 upon restart to select advanced start-up Options;
then select Safe Mode.

How do I disable the BIOS Memory Options - how do I first of all
get into BIOS ????

I did a restart but it didn't help... While booting up, it gets to the
Windows XP Logo with the moving strip at the bottom of the screen;
and then it suddenly crashes to the same error message as mentioned above.

Any idea how to repair this boot ???
I really cannot afford to loose my data and applications on the hard disk,
as it is NOT backed up. So, I want to refrain from Windows re-installation.

Please help !!

Read through the books you got with your computer and it should tell you
how- but be *very* careful. Using inappropriate settings WILL stop the
machine from starting even if you sort the other problem. Your best to leave
it alone- it worked with those settings before, why would the same settings
be a problem now?

Repair or reinstall your OS using your original install CD.

*If* you still want to get into your BIOS and can't find the info when you
look then common keypresses needed can be given if you ask again (or found
using a web search), but it is doubtful that it will be of any help, and
could add to your problems. What exactly do you intend to change?

You don't have to format your drive to repair or reinstall so your data
doesn't have to be destroyed. And you can use a boot disk to access the
drive to save the data before you start repairs. You did create and have a
boot disk?- it's part of the install routine. If not then there are sites
that can help- try www.bootdisk.com
