Barry

After downloading a microsoft update my machine willnot
boot properly.

It starts up then goes to the screen saying ther has been
a problem, and choose a boot method (last known,\safe etc)
Whatever I choose itjust keeps going in a cycle of
reboots, sometimes getting to the XP Pro logo then
rebooting. Have scanned with Norton Antivirus 2004 and no
virus found.

Any suggestions???

I'd try unistalling the update. Go to My Computer>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and there should be Updates (or Hotfixes). Uninstall the most recent one then restart. If this fixes your problem then it is definitely the Update and rules out any other possibilities. Go back to Microsoft Update website and try reinsalling the Update again (or don't and trust in your firewall and/or anti-virus software).
