Windows XP, DOS games & strange keyboard behaviour

M

Mitja

I've got a weird keyboard problem with several DOS games when trying
to run them under WinXP: After running the game, the cursor keys
continue to work, but the return key and space bar are as if
nonexistent. The system simply ignores them.

I'm using a Cherry keyboard and WinXP pro without any special service
packs. I've got two keyboard layouts installed, English and one
another.

Anybody spotted the same or similar problem. Any ideas greatly
appreciated.

Hi Mitja,

Do you experience the same symptoms using the
various compatibility options as well? Here's how...

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :)

Well, XP gives one no advantages in gaming. Old PCs being dirt cheap w OS´s,
why not get one and play away.
There are also available switchboxes for the SVGA.
XP is not the thing for old games, one can get Win98 Lite on the net and
just use it. It has no help files or anything not needed.
Alternatively, look in XP on Program Compability Mode. Or on Google.
Besides, not having any SPs, one you sure need, is the one on "games stop
responding".
