windows xp & dos app

The following has been done repeatedly, and can be repproduced, I do not
understand why.

I have a dos app ( file express) which runs fine on win2k and previous win
os's. It will freeze/hang on win xp, ( with 32 bit processors). I run it on
any amd 64 bit processor machine ( the os is 32 bit), and it runs fine. Is
there something about the 64 bit processor that makes a difference ?

Not aquatinted with the application, but it would seem it is a compatibility
problem with 64bit.
Have you checked for updates from the software vendor?

I was thinking; 64-bit support often goes with No eXecute support, and
the latter is known to cause compatibility issues with some sware.

Then I read the post again...

DOS app (so unlikely to be new patches from vendor <g> )
OK in Win2000 and "previous Windows" (?NT, ?Win9x, Win3.yuk)
NOT OK in XP32 with 32-bit processors
OK in XP32 with 64-bit processors

....interesting?

Actually, CPU doesn't often cause compatibility issues, compared to
SVGA, motherboard chipset, RAM and HD capacity thresholds, etc.

Some DOS apps (especially file managers like PC Tools) used to use
features of pre-accelerated SVGA to render graphic-like effects in
text modes, by defining custom screen fonts and/or using non-standard
SVGA modes to get more text on screen.

Some of these fail compatibility with some DOS apps (e.g. DOS Shell
from MS-DOS 6.xx and Win9x) with certain SVGA chipsets. In fact, DOS
Shell itself may sometimes cause memory mismanagement issues when used
with some motherboards and processor speeds.

More info on the PC specs may help, as well as a description of how
the app fails when it doesn't work?

I appreciate your response.

the motherboard is an A8N-vm (Asus)
1 G dual channel ram

nvidia geforce 6100 ( ivdeo)
nforce 410 mcp

The program hangs/freezes the machine, a ctrl-alt-del will allow me to
terminate the program. I did, once, to get the program to run without hanging
on the 32 bit
processor, however it ran very, very, very slow, after 5 minutes it still had
not read the data file, ( should take about 12 seconds).
