Windows XP Desktop

I have a blue vertical bar, on the left hand side of my
desktop, which looks like a task bar with folders in it.
When i open an application the bar disappears, but when i
go back to the desktop it re-appears.

Has anyone got any ideas how to get rid of it.

You have "Common Task" enabled on the desktop. This should help:
