Windows XP Defragmenting hard-disk

P

Phil

When I try to defragment my hard-disk, I get a message
saying "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is
scheduled to run on the volume: HP_PAVILION (C:).

Please run Chkdsk /f"

Then when I attempt to run "Chkdsk /f" I get a message
saying:

"The type of file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

Then, when I say yes, and restart the computer, nothing
happens.

What is the process I need to stop to allow me to
defragment my hard-disk?

You can't run chkdsk,C: is being used by you,by having
the computer on,it must be run at start-up.Try this -
--My Computer---right click on C: drive---properties---
tools tab---under error checking,check now---check both
boxes fix files, and recover bad sectors---start(It may
start to run thru, then say cannot perform,or may not able
to perform)select yes---then restart the box---it should
start running. If that doesn't work try looking here
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
for the fix for Chkdsk, the one to restore defrag is line
280 left colume,somewhere in there is a repair defrag,but
I got a little dizzy looking for them.

you need to stop the thought process in your head which tells you you
need windows. for a superior, stable, secure alternative switch to linux.
