Disk Defrag using Windows XP

I am having problems defragging my hard drive.

When I defrag this is what it says.-

Disk defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run
on the volume: PRESARIO (C:)

Please run chkdsk /f

When I tried that it says-

The type of the file system is NTFS cannot run because the
volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule
this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)

So I typed in Y and what?

Nothing happens after system restarts.

I tried to click defrag again, it says the same thing I typed
at the beginning.

What should I do?

It seems I have this problem after I installed a D-link 604
router. Will that affect it???

Thanks.

Try running Defrag/Chkdsk from the Safe Mode. See "A Description of
the Safe Boot Mode Options in Windows XP"
Also read "Description of Enhanced Chkdsk, Autochk, and Chkntfs Tools
in Windows 2000" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=218461).
