Windows XP Could Not Start

I got the message when I booted up my system and got the message - Windows
XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM -

I tried to follow the directions and put in the XP Setup CD, and reboot the
the system does recognize it the disk or set it up - I've tied F8 and that
doesn't work either. Any suggestions
