Hi
I am starting a new Care Provider Business in the UK and need to buy 5
computers. I have been given several quotes but would like to know myself how
much the following Windows XP Professional and Office XP (2003). would cost for
these computers.
I have heard Microsoft uses a Licensing system, can anyone enlighten me on
this?

Regards
Mel Green

Normally, the cost of the OS is bundled with the computer. If you are
being quoted separately for it, then check online (since it's so easy)
for comparison, say Amazon.co.uk
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/202-9287680-0271823
where XP Pro sells for £252 and Office XP Standard £334
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/202-9287680-0271823.
Another good UK source is Greymatter. I suspect that deals can be
found elsewhere, but I'm not familiar.

You also may wish to compare prices with checking for same spec machine
from www.dell.co.uk and have it come bundled with XP Pro and Office
Standard.

You can read about Microsoft licensing bundles in UK at
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/howtobuy/default.mspx. My hunch is that
with only 5 machines, you as well to simply get them bundled with the
machines from a good source.

You either need an individual copy of each for each machine which will
come out just under £500 each, ex VAT, per machine for Windows XP Pro
and Office XP Standard or look into Volume Licensing, which starts at
five machines - see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/pricingvolume.asp

(There may also be something if you start explicitly at the
www.microsoft.co.uk site)

You can buy a site license from Microsoft for your business,
but with only 5 computers it may not be any less expensive
than buying your software as individual packages.

The manufacturer's (OEMs) such as Dell offer almost any
software you want at very good prices. The selection of
what software you get depends on whether you select the
"display" model from the web site or click on the
"customize" button and look at the software offered.

You will want Windows XP Professional so you have the
security options on your LAN in your business. That is a
little more expensive than XP Home and you have to select
the option.

You may want or need OFFICE XP or 2003 but be aware that it
comes with several different applications. There is OFFICE
Small Business Edition with WORD, EXCEL, Outlook and
Publisher, that does not include PowerPoint. OFFICE
Standard has WORD, EXCEL, Outlook and PowerPoint.
If you need a database program you want OFFICE Professional
because in includes Access in addition to the Standard
selection of items.

When you buy your computer, look at business computers, they
will have fewer flashy and expensive video cards and the
software packages will be more likely to include what you
need.

| Last time i checked it was $100.00 for windows xp pro
