How do I upgrade from XP Home edition to XP Professional

Hello folks...

Happy new year to everyone!

We are still a XP shop and XP will be our standard for a while longer and I
can't change that.

But now I need to upgrade four Dell notebook Computers from XP Home edition
to XP PROFESSIONAL. I read somewhere that I can buy licensing for Windows 7
and then call Microsoft to obtain Media and product keys for XP Professional
after I receive the Windows 7 media.

Is that true? In any case, I need to get XP Professional for 4 Dell
notebook computers. What is the best way to proceed and is this even
possible?

What phone number do I call at Microsoft to obtain this information perhaps
even obtaining part numbers and get a clearly written document that says I
can get this done?

Please advise....

If this link is not in one line, copy and paste to the url line in your
browser instead of clicking on it in this post.

But why do you need Pro? There's not much difference between Home and Pro?
(just curious)

I think win7 with downgrade option only comes from OEM vendors, (anyone?)

There is very little difference between XP Home and XP Pro. Out of
curiosity, which specific Pro-only features do you believe you need? You
might be pleasantly surprised to learn that XP Home can do them, too!

Hello Mr. Browser,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Sales Information today.

Per our discussion, I've attached the links and information that you
requested below.

"Customers may have the option to acquire Software Assurance for certain
licenses purchased from the Retail channel (full packaged product) or from
an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Eligibility varies by program,
product pool and the license source (see below). In all cases, only
licenses for the latest version of a product are eligible, and the Software
Assurance must be acquired "within 90 days" from the date the licenses are
acquired. Under Open Value, this option applies only to non Company-wide
products. Under Enterprise Agreements, it applies only to Additional
Products "within 90 days". "

This can be found in the January 2010 Product List which can be downloaded
here:

"Customers can acquire the latest version in order to use an older version

Not a very useful response either Daave. Bikini says he does require being
able to join a domain and use group policies which of course XP Home can't
do..

Bikini did not say that in his/her first post, Steve. Also note that I
was repsonding to Jim, not Bikini. Pay attention!

Daave,
This was Cross Posted to a SBS Newsgroup which Requires XP Pro, not HOME to
Join.
And you ask others to pay attention?

Excuse me Russ,

Are MVPs so pedantic to worry about petty matters? Don't you guys have
anything better to do than worry about where it was posted to. I don't look
at NG list in To row (nor do I expect anybody to do so) because I don't need
to. I expect the OP to post it in the right group. If he didn't then tough
luck.

Get a life boy.

If you don't like posts from MVP's Please feel free not to read any...
Crying won't get you anywhere!

Thanks

Yes, I am asking that others pay attention. And if you read it again,
you would be able to see what happened.

One thing that I did miss was the crosspost. Had I seen that, I wouldn't
have asked the question in the first place. But that doesn't negate the
fact that SteveB confused OP with Jim Behning or didn't get the
chronology correct. Had he been paying attention, he wouldn't have been
confused.

Then again, I will take responsibility for missing the crosspost; I was
reading Bikini's post in the help_and_support group and although he/she
hadn't mentioned the needed features until 45 minutes *after* I asked,
had I noticed the cross-post, I wouldn't have asked that particular
question to begin with.

You need to understand that quite a few people who post to that
particular newgroup do not need XP Pro. Many of us ask what the specific
needs of the poster are in order that we might be able save him or her a
little bit of money. For instance, some people don't realize that they
can easily use XP Home to access domain shares (even if they can't
*join* the domain as XP Pro could).

One might reasonably expect XP users to know something about XP
upgrades, which is not in itself really an SBS issue, but one of the SBS
newsgroup readers might well have relevant recent experience, and we all
use XP Pro as a matter of course. Also, we're polite. So nobody is being
expected to look at the posting list, just to answer the question as
asked, or move on.

I'm well aware of the reasoning behind asking why a particular activity
is being proposed, and in many cases it's a good idea to do so. *In*
*addition* to actually answering the question, not instead of it.

And no, I'm not an MVP, nor an M-anything.

D

Doum

You can't join XP Home to a domain, you can with XP Pro. So if you are
after form of central administration of accounts, or need to join a
domain (such as an SBS domain) then you need Pro.

I know that, but it wasn't mention by the OP in the post I replied to.
