Windows XP - can't open zip files

tielk

I bought a new computer and had saved all my old files on
my zip drive. (had win 98) With XP - the zip files won't
open, error mssg. says the disk was compressed
using "Drivespace 3." Can anyone tell me how to open
these files in Windows XP? Thanks!

Cannot Restore Backups That You Create in Windows 95, Windows 98,
or Windows Me with the Windows XP Ntbackup Tool

You may have success restoring Win 9X backups (.qic files)
with Stomp BackupMYPC (formerly Veritas Backup Exec),

There's a 30 day free trial, so try it out!

If the ZIP disk are truely using DriveSpace 3, then you can never open them
in XP. DriveSpace 3 is Windows 98 only and was abandoned years ago. You
will need to restore then in Windows 98 and then save them normally (no
Drivespace) again.

Also, make sure that you are using the latest ZIP drive drivers.

Drivespace was a compression method used for entire disks in the days of
Win95/98 when hard disk space was under pressure. It needed 'real
mode' drivers loaded at boot, which are not supported in XP, and there
is no prospect of there being *any* support for this technique. You
will have to take your Zip cartridges to a machine running Win98 with
drive space, and back them up in some other way that can be read in XP.
Doing it on a machine that also has a CD burner would be one choice, or
pack up the the files outside the Drivespace compression method (say
with WinZip) and write them to cartridges that have been formatted
without using drivespace
