Windows XP Bootup

For some reason today my PC will not bootup to Windows. I get as far as the
Windows XP splash screen. Then just black screen. When I booted the PC up
into safe mode and took a look at the system log I found a message that
states the following:

The COM+ event system detected a bad return code during it's internal
processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of
D:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\event s\tier1\eventsystemboj.cpp

No idea what has happened...but the support people I talked to wanted to go
right to a system recovery which is the last thing I want unless no other
thing can be done..

Any help is appreciated.

This message from Mike Brannigan references an unavailable KB article
indicating damaged system files..

Does System Restore do anything? Otherwise do a repair install of Windows if
possible. Your message indicates that you might have an OEM "Recovery CD"
that disallows a repair install, that would be unfortunate. If that's the
case, you may have to rescue your files somehow and do a System Recovery.

Try using System Restore and choose a restore point from yesterday.

Note that to run System Restore in Safe Mode you may have to click
Start, and then click Help and Support. Click Performance and
Maintenance, click Using System Restore to undo changes, and then
click Run the System Restore Wizard.

Good luck

Hi, MD.

A "system recovery disk" from an OEM is probably NOT what you want to use!
I've never had one of these, but my understanding is that it restores your
computer to the state it was in when it left the (HP? Compaq? Dell?)
factory, deleting all YOUR data and other files in the process! :>(

What Lee is really suggesting is an "in-place upgrade", also known as a
repair install, as described in this KB article:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

This reinstalls WinXP itself (you'll have to reinstall updates afterwards,
including SP2 if it is not included in your WinXP CD), but will preserve
your installed applications and data - and most of your tweaks. It will
take as long as a reinstall, so it's not a quickie project, but it usually
fixes almost all kinds of WinXP problems.

This generally requires a full WinXP CD-ROM, not just the OEM's Recovery
Disk. Each OEM is supposed to furnish such a full WinXP CD with each
computer, but many readers have reported that they did not receive one. If
you tell us which make and model computer you have, someone probably will be
familiar with it and have some suggestions.

But your problem does not sound to me like a problem with WinXP itself. A
Google search on the filename in your post:
qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemboj.cpp

pointed out a slight typo; the final filename should contain "obj", not
"boj". But Google still came up with 3 hits. The first one is:a thread
started 9/19/04 in the MSN Group, Windows XP Inside Out:
http://groups.msn.com/WindowsXPInsi...Message=1027&LastModified=4675489978572943503

Replies in that thread pointed to some problems in Microsoft Office XP.
I'll let you follow up the thread. You might want to visit the Office
newsgroups after reading there.
