For the last two weeks I have received automatic updates every night when I
shut my computer off. Does Microsoft really send out updates every day for
Windows xp or is there something wrong with my computer? Bobby

The last couple of days I've been getting the update icon show up on my
desktop in the clock area. I download and install, says installation
complete, but the icon doesn't go away. I went to windows update site and
check on my history of updates and found the same update had been downloaded
7 or 8 times. Can anyone help me with this problem, would really appreciate
it as this is driving me batty.

Something's wrong with your computer (unless Windows Defender's installed;
even then, Defender should only update twice a week via Automatic Updates).

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

Thanks. I disabled my Avast anti-virus software and my Norton firewall and
enabled Windows firewall but I still have the same update attempt at each
shutdown. Do you have any other recommendations?

I checked Windows Update Support. I went to Windows Update on my computer
and "Review your update history." My update history shows 20-30 consecutive
security updates labeled "KB936181" all of which suceeded with no failures or
error codes. Still they keep popping up every time I shut down the computer.
My history shows no failures for the last 50-60 updates.

I tried several of your suggestions. One of them worked. My shutdowns are
now normal. Thank you very much. Bobby
