Windows XP automatic Update Service

when I use the Automatic Update Service it will copy the
files to the computer but will not install them. The
progress bar does not move at all, even though the dialog
says it is installing. I have followed most of the
information that is in the MS Knowledge base, and have
even reinstalled windows as an update. I have now
completely run out of ideas and places to look. Could you
please offer advice, this is driving me beserk.

Have a look in the Windows Update.log file - which can be found in the Windows folder - for any error numbers - towards the end of the file. If you find any, see if they are referenced here:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Also have a look under 'View Installation History' - on the Windows Update page, for the Hotfix numbers that haven't installed.
