Windows XP and Word 97

Cathy

I upgraded to Windows XP last week. I was using Windows
ME before that. Now that I've upgraded, Word 97 (part of
the Office 97 suite) won't open. Publisher and Excel
(from the Office 97 suite) do work. I've run the
Compatibility Wizard, but I can't get Word 97 to open.
What's wrong?

Word 97 certainly works in XP cause I'm using it.
I also upgraded from windows ME - but I uninstalled it
prior to the upgrade and then reinstalled when XP was
up and running and I was happy with it.

Can you uninstall and reinstall?

Word 97 works OK for me, perhaps you could try uninstalling and then
reinstalling. You could post a question on one of the MS Office or MS
Word newsgroups if you can't find a solution. Don't forget to check the
MS Office site for downloads for Office 97 used with Win XP.
Good Luck.......

H, Dave.

I think you have a global template problem. To check this go to Start/Run
and browse to Winword.exe (usually in Windows\Programs\Micrososft
Office\Office.

You should then have "C:\Windows\Programs\Microsoft
Office\Office\winword.exe" in quotes. Add one space and type /a Hit OK. If
Word opens it will be a global template that is causing the problem

Go Start/Search for files and folders and look for Normal.dot. When it pops
up right click and rename it (say, normal2.dot) then reboot. Hopefully all
will be okay. If not, work your way through each template until you find the
culprit.

Good luck.

You have slipped the WORD CD into the drive and attempted a "repair
reinstall"? Try that.
