Windows XP and Terminal Service Sessions

I am about to test a Windows 2003 server with Terminal Services Application
Mode on our wireless laptops, the operating system on the laptops will be
WindowsXP SP2, my requirements must be that the user does not see any desktop
or anything else from the local machine, I only want them to see a login
screen which would be the login screen to the Terminal Service Session, how
can I do this?

Any help would be appreciated

Hello SVSnyper,

This is a knee jerk reaction... That might not be a grand idea!

If the laptop is going to be a dumb terminal it might be best to try one
of the DOS, LINUX, or WinCE based rdp clients. Most of them will boot from
a floppy. One concern is getting the wireless to work. That will depend
the platform and support for the wireless hardware which may be why you're
going with XP in the first place.

If you need to use XP, the following MIGHT work for you.

READ THIS WARNING FIRST!

Make sure you have a backup of everything on the laptop because this is a
one way trip! To recover from this change you'll need to have the tools
and expertise to edit the registry after taking away the native OS' ability
to run programs and allow access to the registy.

MAKE A BACKUP NOW!

(Do you feel warned? Good!)

Take a look at: http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/849

Good luck!

Again, thanks for the help, I have noted your warnings, fortunately I have
ghosted the laptop so I will quickly be able to restore anything that goes
wrong

Simon,

I see you are indeed wise! You can probably get by with loading a Recovery
CD that will allow access to the other volume. If it were a standard drive
you could just put it in another XP machine. They you just load the correct
registry hive to "edit it back". Of course a good Ghost is by far the easiest
way to go.

Another thought I had later is to edit the system.ini file. I tend to remember
that doesn't work under W2K and XP.

Simon,

Try:
- http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/usewinemb/xp/default.aspx <- Windows
XP Embedded home page.

The home page might tell you how to get it but it sounds like you use standard
XP and customize it. The Deployment link gets right to how to build and
install it.

- or -

The first result of the google search says you need a special tool from MS
and you need to call to get it.

-or -

- Under "Search the Knowledge Base" click "Advanced Search"
- In "Search Products:" select "-- More Products --" (at the end of the product
list)
- Click "W" then "Windows XP Embedded"
- In "For:" type install and hit enter

This is good reading on the subject.

Too many people have helped me in the news groups. Of course often they
were helping someone else, but through the magic of Deja and Google I was
lucky too. Hopefully this will help you and a whole bunch of others as well.
