Windows XP and Quicktime 6.5.1

I have XP SP1, and have just installed iTunes with Quicktime 6.5.1, which is
automatically included. The sound from this is garbled and stutters. I
have tried downloaded music from iTunes, CDs played on my own machine, and
music stored on my hard drive, mostly MP3. I have reinstalled both iTunes
and Quicktime, having first uninstalled the originals, and I have
reinstalled Quicktime as a standalone. Previous versions of Quicktime have
not had problems, but iTunes insists on the 6.5.1. Nothing I have done has
made any difference.

Apple support say that there are no issues with iTunes or Quicktime in XP,
and the fault must therefore lie with my software, and I should reinstall
XP. The other players on my system, Windows Media Player, Total Recorder,
Winamp, Real Player, and LP Recorder all work perfectly with whatever is
thrown at them. DXdiag shows no problem with sound with any codec, both
with 'sounds' and with music. It is Version DirectX 9a. I have AC97 sound
integrated on an MSI 6380 motherboard, updated to latest. I have an Athlon
1.13 GHz and 256 MB RAM.

Apple have now washed their hands of the problem. I can reinstall XP, if I
have to, but I am reluctant to do so if it doesn't improve matters.

Has anyone experienced this problem, or has a solution please?

If you get a solution would be interested to hear it ... I'm looking to put
XP SP1 on my MS 6380 board and use onboard sound in the next week or so.

I don't know if this will work but it's worth a go...

Go to control panel and open the QuickTime settings. Choose Sound Out from
the drop-down box. On the sound out settings choose the dropdown box and
select WaveOut. If it is already set as WaveOut, try choosing Direct Sound.

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

Daniel - This is the only problem I have had with the AC97 sound chip on my
MSI 6380, so if you are not interested in iTunes, there is no reason not to
go ahead. I'll let you know if I find a solution.

Daniel - you're a top geezer. I didn't know of the existence of the
settings in Control Panel, but on your advice, I had a look, and found it
was set at Direct Sound. I found another setting for Windows Preferred, and
set that, and it works. Not perhaps as well as I would like, but I have
always had sound issues in XP, and it has never been as good as ME. You
would think, after about 30 minutes talking to Apple, they might have
suggested that, wouldn't you? That's one reason why I never use my Mac now.

I'll work my way through some of the other settings now, in case there is a
better one.

Thanks again!

The other Daniel please note.

Daniel and Daniel

I tried all the sound out settings, and all of them now work. As far as I
can tell, there is no difference between them, but I have left it on Realtek
AC97, which should suit my onboard sound. I guess it was the fact that it
was a new installation, and nothing had been positively set in sound out
until now. That's probably something Apple should look at.

david this ones easy, unless yur really fond of itunes. i hav 3rd gen ipod for sum time now. as for apple sayin itunes has no issues ?, lol, hooooooowwwwl. go to ephpod.com and dwnld latest vers. of ephpod. uninstall the itunes "virus" but just leave the updater. install ephpod and yur good to go. you will now use only the win xp uninstall device icon in tool tray. and use either ephpod or media player to organise mp3 files. (note: media player supports most mp3 plyrs. but not ipod) so dont waste time tryin to interface transfers to pod frm media plyr. i talked to an apple user just the other day, and she reported the same prob on her apple tht i had w/ipod/itunes software, ie; software doesnt always recognise ipod whn plugged in.
