Windows XP and MS-DOS

Arne Cleveland

I wish to convert from Windows 98 to XP. I have been using
a DOS program, MYM-Managing Your Money, for 15 years and
found nothing good enough to replace it.

On Win 98 when I click on the MYM icon, I do not even know
that I am entering a DOS envirnment. I can find nothing in
the Microsoft site that will assure me of the same support
under XP. Can you help me?

Thanks,
Arne

ps. I assume Office 97 will run good under XP!

You need to test it. Most dos programs run on bot NT and 9x but some run on one or the other. Like all Dos programs you may need to configure the environment to the program. 9x standard configuration is like a plain Dos machine while NT standard configuration is of a corporate configured Dos machine. So you need to read the manual for your program and make sure the Dos environment is configured for that program (as you would have had to do on a real dos machine).

There's a 99% chance it will work with configuration.

First, OFFICE 97 will run just fine under Windows XP, either
Home or Pro.

DOS support... XP is not build upon the old MS-DOS operating
system as were the prior OSs such as W95,98 and ME. But it
does have a command line and it can run most DOS programs.
Many DOS programs will simply "ask" what version of DOS they
are running under and you can set up a DOS program to use
the "compatibility mode" and tell it that it is running
under a prior version of Windows
But it may not work, particularly if it tries to directly
access hardware resources.

There are lots of Windows XP money management programs, from
Quicken and MS MONEY. You might give them a try, you'd be
surprised at how much has changed in 15 years.

Install it first on a XP computer to see if it will even work.
