Windows XP and Internet Explorer - Version 6

Does anyone know why IE Version 6 "hangs up" whenever I
change any of the Internet options ( edit preferences).
As soon as I make my change and click on "apply" shortly
afterwards I get a "program is not responding
message."...and then IE 6 shuts down....
