Windows XP "All Programs" Manager

P

PeterH

Need another manager.

Under my "Start / All Programs" I have so many programs that they go off the
right-side of the screen and their full description is not visible.

Is there a better way to manage them (with freeware) so I have better access
to them all?

I don't think you need an application, freeware or not, to do this.
All you need to do is organise your start-menu.
Gather the programs into groups (subfolders) like...
Office, Comms, Graphics, Audio... etc.
Then move the programs into groups and you'll have a neat cascading
start-menu.

Also, the width of the columns is controlled by the length of the
longest entry of all. You can abbreviate the names of the entries
(rename). I have six columns and have been wondering if I'll ever try
for seven.

How do I do that?

I have looked under the Start Menu folder under "Docs and Settings / User"
but it doesn't list all the programs that appear under "Start / All
Programs".

The Start Menu is way too wild for me to control. I'm not that advanced.

Why not drop several folders/categories (Apps, Games, Internet, Tools Etc)
into the Quick Launch menu, and drop shortcuts in them? You can shorten the
QL menu and have a very small tidy cascading menu, or widen it and open
folders with 1 click.

I have the same problem as PeterH - can you describe how to the above

For those interested Win XP has existing methods of organizing your start
menu.

Right-Click the START button for your start menu's and either choose:
"open" for current user
or
"open all users" for all cpu users

From there its just like using a file manager to create , delete, move ,
copy in whatever order you want, but remember you must keep certain folders
and sub-folder, ie. Programs, Startup.

I hope this helps

I'm using XP Home and have altered the default layout so that choosing START
ALL PROGRAMS brings up one long alphabetical list of the programs which
can be browsed up or down,
thus avoiding the programs going off the screen on the right. Trouble is, I
can't remember how I did it, but it IS possible. Personally I seldom use the
list, as I prefer to access programs which are not on the Start list or
Taskbar via shortcuts in Desktop or QuickLaunch folders.

I think if you right click Start and then select Properties, you can
then click on the Start Menu tab and click on Customize. One of the
selections in this box will let you turn on or off Scroll Programs. If
you turn it on, it makes one long, scrollable (is that a word?) list and
if you have it turned off, they are the "fly out" type menu. Hope this
is what you want.

Jim: Your post jogged my memory about how I turned on the scrollable (the
word I couldn't think of in my original post) menu. The full sequence is:

Right click Start
Click Properties
Click Start Menu (if necessary)
Click Customize
Click Advanced
Check Scroll Programs (near the bottom of the list)
Click OK
Click Apply
Click OK

There are several other useful tweaks possible, including showing the
Control Panel/My Music/My Pictures as scrollable menus and adding/deleting
Start Menu items.

(BTW my spell-checker considers scrollable to be a genuine word)
