Windows XP Activation

I got a OEM copy of windows xp home with my laptop. I have reinstalled
windows once since i got the laptop from Dell, and I am now trying to
download/install Directx 9.0c.

When i try and download Directx from the microsoft website, it attempts to
verify my copy of windows and tells me that it is not activated.

I attempted to go to programs>Accessories>Systems Tools but the Windows
Activiation program is not there.

When i attempt to install Directx 9.0c from a game CD, the Windows Logo
Verification test pops up, tells me the software has failed to pass windows
logo verification and refuses to install the program. I am logged in as
administrator and have logo verification in Driver signing turned OFF.

Something i found said OEM Windows XP versions sometimes do not require
additional activiation once installed, and - while it was a while ago now - i
don't remember having to activate this copy of windows when i reinstalled it
(I reinstalled it from the XP recovery CD that came with my computer).

Any suggestions?

What type of OEM version of XP Home did you get? The dreaded Recovery CD or
the original XP Home install CD?

Sorry for double posting but someone had suggested I run "oobe/msoobe /a" to
check if my copy was activated. My laptop makes sounds as if it was booting
up a program (can hear the harddrive searching) but nothing pops up...

And, just to clear something up, by "OFF" I mean the 'Ignore' setting :p

When your OEM pre-installed Windows XP they likely used a general product
key vice the one on the label of your computer.
When I did the Microsoft Verification, there were two options:
Enter the Product Key
Enter information about your computer starting with the OEM name.

I choose the second option and entered Sony and {if I recall correctly} the
basic model information. Verification completed with no problem. Suggest
you try Verification again at the Microsoft site and try enter computer
information option vice Product Key option.

The correct command is:

%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

(copy and paste the above string into the Start - Run dialog box).

If there is no "Activate Windows item listed on the Accessories -
System Tools window that normally means that your OEM Windows XP is a
"BIOS Locked" version, which is what Dell has been using for some time
now. These versions are self-activating when installed on the correct
(= Dell in this instance) hardware and you should not be getting
activation related problems.

You might try repairing the registry entries for the .DLL files used
by product activation. Use Start - Run and enter the following text
in the dialog box:
regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

Then do it again with the following text:
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

Good luck

Assuming that you used the same product key that is on the bottom of your
laptop there should not be any major issues. You might have to call
Microsoft to manually activate your copy. No big deal, have to do it all the
time at worl when reinstalling OEM's on customers machines.
When reinstalling from a recovery disk there is no need to reactivate;
however, if you used a straight oem and did a clean install then reactivation
is required most of the time.

Go to start>>
run>>
and enter the following line:

oobe/msoobe /a

This is the following path to manually begin the activation wizard.
