Windows XP 5 minute Load time

hi,

i have a new machine that takes forever for windows XP to load after logging
in.
once loaded, the machine works fine. this time delay occured about 1 week
after having the machine running smoothly with all my applications that
pre-load on boot up...no problems then but now SLOW.

computer specs:
intel duo core processor
2gb ram
300gb drive

during the slow load, NO strange processes are eating up CPU usage.

if i run a safe mode boot Windows XP loads quick...no surprise there.

can anyone help out or provide a solution to isolating the problem causing
the slow load?

thanks in advance.

Try downloading a free registry cleaner from download.com. It will root
out corrupt keys during the startup up and can also scan the boot
process to detect errors. Try looking for Abexo Free Registry Cleaner 1
and or Computer Analyzer. Remeber to scan the installation files before
installation.

Check the Event Log (Run->eventvwr). Look in the System Event log and I can pretty much guarantee that there will be one or more
Error events (they are marked by red x-circles), at the start of each boot-up (check the date/time stamps), with the Source listed
as "Service Control Manager". Double-click those to see which service is hanging, and thus causing the delay-particularly the first
one of the session (the one nearest the bottom of the latest set).

hi alec

thanks, yes many errors alerts!

starting from the 1st error on reboot to the last they are:

~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
Browser service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
ShellHWDetection service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
Schedule service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
ShellHWDetection service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
dmserver service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
FastUserSwitchingCompatibility service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
AudioSrv service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
Schedule service.
~~~~~~~~
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the
ShellHWDetection service.
~~~~~~~~
The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

no wonder it takes 5mins to load XP. if anyone can shed light on fixing
these errors the beers on me.

thanks,
j

Yup! Thirty seconds per shot is definitely a noticible wait.

What you want to notice is that last one. Apparently your system is trying to find/access other computers on the network (network,
not Internet). Is your computer on a network or standalone (eg, at home)?

yes, the another machine is connected to the same router but i dont access it
or even share resources with it...other than the same Internet connection.

other maching is running W2K, mine XP.

Open the services MMC snap-in (Run->services.msc), and check the "Computer Browser" service. Is it running ("Started")? What is
it's startup type?

Yup, if you're not sharing resources-or anything else-with other computers (and your really shouldn't be under normal
circumstances), then you should stop that service and set it to Manual (double-click the service, then set it's startup type to
manual). Then reboot and check to see that it starts faster (and there are no more errors in the event log).

The service keeps trying to poll the computers connected to the network, but since you're not connected to a domain controller, it
won't find what it's expecting, which causes it to wait until it times out.

alec, you're good.

setting it to manual worked. boot up time back to normal and no errors logged!

thanks so much for your expertise.

thanks again,

Hi. i followed all the steps and apparently, a service called "PASCO
PASPORT USB DRIVER" s the problem. it fails to start everytime i boot
up my laptop so the system waits until the operation times out. i dont
know what the service is for but i would appreciate it if anyone could
help me get rid of this. Thanks.
