How do I tell which version I have? I don't see it
anywhere in the System Information page. I have Windows
XP Home Edition 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 build 2600.

thanks

Assuming you purchased your computer from Dell, Gateway, local retail
outlet, .etc, you have the 32bit version of Windows.

XP Home is 32-bit only.

64 bit XP is rarely seen because, at the moment, it only supports machines
based on the Intel Itanium CPU. At least hundreds of those must have been
sold so far. ;-)

I imagine you're trying to install the proper security patch. Good idea.

Almost certainly you have the 32-bit edition. Almost anybody who
has to ask the question is running the 32-bit version. The 64-bit
version requires special hardware. It and the hardware have come
down in price, but are still substantially more expensive than
the standard consumer PCs you see around. Very few home users are
using it.

But if you want to check to be sure, enter WINVER at the Start |
Run line.

If it doesn't say anything about 64 bit, than it should be just the 32
bit version

The processor can also give you a hint as to what version you should be
running, someting like x86-64 or something like that

Greetings --

If you have to ask, you're almost definitely running the 32-bit
version of WinXP. (I'm not trying to be facetious; I'm sure you'd
have noticed paying several thousand dollars more for the Itanium or
Itanium II CPU required to run the 64-bit version of WinXP Pro.)
There is no 64-bit version of WinXP Home.

To verify for yourself, Click Start > Run, type in "Winver" and
press <Enter>. If the resulting dialog box does not _explicitly_
state that you have "Windows XP 64-Bit Edition," then you have a
32-bit OS.
