32 bit or 64 bit?

Where do I go to find out if I have 32 or 64 bit XPpro, I have a dual core
AMD 64 processor but can't remember if I have 32 or 64 bit software. I
looked in control panel/system. I am running a very early version of XP pro
Version 5.1.2600. I am having audio problems and screwed up my driver. Now
after uninstalling, my driver install fails. Something about the wrong
hardware. Since I haven't changed hardware, I am assuming that it doesn't
like the 64 bit driver that I downloaded from Asus. Having a computer with
no sound is very (quiet). I had a power supply issue with my speakers which
I have resolved.

If your wallet wasn't significantly lighter, it's 32-bit (even though your
hardware isn't). Running Winver or MSINFO32 will tell you, too. Get the XP
x86 driver from the manufacturer's website.

Click Start | Run and enter winver in the run box and click on ok. If
you see 64-Bit Edition then you have the 64-Bit version.

Almost certainly you have the 32-bit edition. Almost anybody who has
to ask the question is running the 32-bit version.

But if you want to check to be sure, enter WINVER at the Start | Run
line.

That's almost certainly correct. Get the 32-bit driver.

Why would his wallet be lighter? XP Pro x64 system builder is about the
same price as XP Pro x86 system builder (there is no retail x64).

OK, I don't see anything that says 64 bit in it so my assumption is that I
have 32 bit. So, now I will download the 32 bit driver and see if that is
my problem. I just retired last month and didn't realize that I would be
brain dead so soon.

Thanks, I now have sound. 32 bit is what it was.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but in the olden days I'd always heard that it was way
pricey (and he does mention an old version).

It never cost any more or any less than XP Pro x86. It released in 2005 as
OEM (system builder) only and that is all that it has been since.
