My computer wont remain in standby/sleep mode. How can I
tell what's waking it up?

My first guess is that your mouse is sensitive to vibrations. I keep
mine on a piece of softish packing foam and go on standby via the
keyboard (some people leave their mice upside down, but I think that's
just cruel).

There is a setting in device manager that will bring the computer out
of standby if the phone rings, but check the mouse first.

Actually, the Wake on LAN feature is set in BIOS, not through Device
Manager. You'd have to reboot, enter BIOS before XP loads, then turn
off the WOL setting.

Device Manager \ modem \ power management tab "allow this device to
bring the computer out of standby".

Then I stand corrected. Of course since I don't have a Modem in my
computer I've never had the ability to see this.
