Sleep

My computer will not stay asleep if I manually put it to sleep. It wakes in
about 5 seconds. And if it goes to sleep itself, it doesn't stay asleep. It
constantly wakes up. I'm afraid it's going to wear out my PC. Is there a
solution to this? I checked everything that could possibly cause it to wake
up and nothing is programmed to wake it up, as far as I know. Please help!

As a test, try disabling the network card via device manager and see
if it stays asleep. Report back.

Bingo! I disable the network card, and the screensaver came on when it was
supposed to (another thing that wasn't working properly) and then after the
presribed time, display turned off and the computer went to sleep and and
stayed alseep. I left it long enough to make sure it didn't wake up. So,
now, my question is, how do I fix this? Does the network card have to be
replaced? This PC is brand new, covered under warranty.

It's almost midnight now, so I'm heading to bed. I will check back here in
the morning before leaving for work.

Thank you.

Hi Brink, I've taken a quick look at the link you sent, and it looks like I
may find the resolution there, but I must leave for work now, and tonight we
have company coming so I don't know how much time I'm going to have to get
back to this. So, please bear with me, and check back here from time to
time, even late tonight I might have a chance to try something. But I do
want to get this resolved, so I will post back. Just one thing....I looked
at Disk Clean-Up and there's no "Hibernation File Cleaner" in the list. I do
not have the "hibernate" option either in the list where Sleep, Shutdown,
Switch User, etc., is found. Anyway, I will try to take time to explore this
later tonight, and post back. Any more you can say on the matter in the
meantime will be helpful. Just a note, however.....this is a brand new PC
under warranty. Thank you. Connie

Brink, one more thing. I just went into cmd.exe to enable the hybernation,
and after typing "powercfg -h on" and pressing enter, it said "You do not
have permission to enable or disable the Hibernate feature." I am the only
user on this PC. I signed in with the password. What gives? Got to get to
work now. Will check back tonight. Thank you. Connie

Connie:

If disabling the network card solved it, then you know where to look.
One specific item to check is to make sure "allow the computer to turn
off this device" is checked off on the power management tab in Device
Manager. Be aware that this can have other implications - Vista is
known to drop shared connections when it power manages the 'net card.
Most of us have shut off this feature for that reason.

Beyond that, Vista made a lot of changes in the network management
area... how it checks for what and when. I suspect some of these
periodic requests are keeping the net card alive and stopping sleep
mode. I'm not well versed enough to give you specific advice on what
your hardware is doing. I'd suggest a post in
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing. There are a couple
folks in there who are well versed in the changes and what Vista might
be looking for.

Brink, I did go into system 32 the first time, but this time I right-clicked
on Command Prompt and then on Run as Administrator. I had no problem them.
So, I enabled the hibernate thing. Don't know if that alone has fixed the
problem yet or not, or added to my problems. I went through the power
options steps in the linked document you sent and what ended up happening was
the display went off and would not come back on, no matter what I did. I had
to turn the computer off by pressing the power button. I put everything back
the way it was. I don't think I should fool around with this any more. It's
only getting worse. I guess I'll have to take it back to where I bought it
and get them to fix it. I could possibly post a question where +Bob+
suggested, and see what happens there. I want to thank you for trying, but
I'm not versed in configuration issues. Connie

Bob, Device Manager has no tabs. Connie

Guess what?! The poblem is fixed! When I messed it up by trying to do those
changes, and the PC went to sleep and wouldn't wake up, except that I shut it
down and start it up again, what I did was go back into Power Options and
clicked on "Restore Plan Defaults". It is now working just fine! I haven't
seen it's performance over a long period of time, but for the first time the
screen saver came on and then eventually the Display went off and the PC went
to sleep! Wow! Just the way it should be! So, I would say that some Tech
person made some changes before it was boxed and forgot to put it back
because we certainly made no changes. It's a brand new PC. Glad it's
working. Thanks for trying to help. Connie

Bob, I'm going to post back to you the same thing I posted back to Brink.

Yes, whatever I did was wrong, but whatever someone else did before it was
put in a box and sent to the retail store was wrong, too!! This PC had never
been out of its box, therefore the configuration was wrong from onset because
the sleep problem was an issue from the beginning, as well as the screensaver
business. Anway, I will see how it runs over the weekend. I hope I won't be
posting further questions on this!! Thank you for being there. Connie

I'm inclined to agree with Connie. I had a number of problems with my new
Vista right from the start, including the fact that the screensaver didn't
work properly, the computer never went to sleep, and hibernation was
something I had never heard of. Unfortunately (because of the
inconvenience) - but fortunately (with hindsight) I experienced a power
outage just seconds after starting my computer. I had the choice of
"repair" or "return to restore point". I chose the "repair" option which
failed. The only option I was then presented with was "return to factory
settings". My computer is now running smoothly and I can't believe what I
put up with before. The only problem I have now is with my keyboard:

" and @ reversed
£ in place of #
~ in place of vertical slash
¬ in place of ~
# in place of back slash

So – no back slash any longer but I can use ASCI symbols if I have to.

I wonder why computers aren't given a final test run before being boxed and
sold.

I don't know if you have already tried to correct your keyboard, but the
place to do that is in 'Regional and Language Options'

Settings for Location and for 'Keyboards and Languages' will affect the
keyboard layout.

Also you may need to install the correct driver for your keyboard, in the
reset you may have reverted to the 'default' keyboard driver and now need to
change to the one for your actual keyboard.
