windows won't start

After running a spyware program, I found a file that kept reappearing
whenever I'd run the spyware detector. I located the file (a "HKEY_..."
file) in the registry editor and manually deleted it. Although I was warned
that deleting the file might cause some Windows programs to stop running, I
did it anyhow because I assumed that this couldn't be attached to anything
important. Now, when I boot up my computer, it loads and stops at the blue
screen right before the desktop. How do I go about restoring the missing
file?

Try booting your computer into safe mode. To do this, reboot your computer
and press F8 repeatedly when you see the white text on black background.

Once in safe mode try running a system restore to a point before you deleted
the 'file'. Here's how to run system restore:

Thanks for the reply, but this didn't work. After choosing safe mode, I got
a whole long page of info -- it was probably info on all my installed
programs and/or hardware. After a moment, the black screen returned to my
problemed blue screen. Was there something else that I had to do while on
the safe mode menu page?

- Scroll down to "Use System Restore"
When you press F8 do you see an option in the menu that says "Last Known
Good Configuration"?. Try choosing that - it's a like system restore

I tried safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, safe mode w/ command prompt, last
known good configuration and all ended with the same result: nowhere-going
startup screen. What else is there?

I can't help here ,because just after loading SP2 yesterday my computer
resets at the same place,,,just before the sign-in block, I've cleared
CMOS and reset BIOS, Taken the Battery out and replaced ,,,It will NOT
recognise the HD or CD drive. Their lights blink ,but will not Boot from
either. Can't get it to do anything from any of the modes either. In
bios under computer health, all the votages and temperatures are
proper.. I'm totally frustrated.

Running AMD Athlon 3400+, gig of Matched memory K8N MSI MOBO.

It may be a messed up HD. Take it out and put it in another computer, then
chkdsk it.
