Windows won't start - 2 pc's with similar problem

This is very strange. I went to see my son yesterday to help him with a
problem with his PC. When switched on, a BSOD appears and then the PC hangs.
If I try and start in safe mode, the pc just does part of the load and then
hangs. There doesn't seem to be a thing that will work.

At home, one of my pcs does much the same today. There is no BSOD on boot,
but Windows won't load, and I can't get into safe mode either.

There is no connection between the two pcs, I have not transferred any
files, or used any common media. On the first pc, my son had recently loaded
drivers for a new router, but ther had been no hardware or software changes
at all on the second.

To have 2 pcs with such a similar problem is a either a massive coincidence
or a problem introduced from the internet - I know there has been a Windows
update released this week, could it be this?

One of the pcs is running XP Pro and one is XP Home.

I'm not sure what to do next to be able to use these PCs again, I'd
appreciate any advice please.

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil,
Have you tried "Last known good configuration", if you press F8 at boot (I
guess this is how you have tried safemode) then select last known good
config from the menu.
